How often do employees' work clothes need to be washed and changed?

Comfortable and modern workwear not only helps protect your employees' health but also highlights your company's identity. It helps distinguish your brand's employees from others. Workwear should not restrict movement, should not interfere with work duties, and should be free of elements that could pose a potential hazard to workers in specific work conditions. Washing and other care procedures are essential to ensure maximum service life and maintain the proper properties of workwear. Regular contamination of work uniforms is inevitable, as their primary purpose is to protect workers from dirt, dust, and harmful substances. Both summer and winter protective clothing must be washed regularly. The frequency of washing is specified in the Intersectoral Occupational Safety and Health Regulations.

Specific rules for washing workwear are contained in the sanitary rules and regulations (SanPiN). For example, Order No. 141 of the Chief Sanitary Doctor dated June 11, 2003, enacted several SanPiNs covering industry, agriculture, communications, and construction. Section 9 of this document is devoted to the care of workwear, and if employees handle radioactive components and substances, washing is carried out in accordance with the provisions of SanPiN 2.2.8.46-03, which addresses clothing decontamination.

Workwear is washed depending on the specific industry and the characteristics of the materials it's made of. The Ministry of Labor's regulation stipulates that workwear should be washed every 6-10 days, depending on the level of contamination (Section 7.14). At livestock farms, slaughterhouses, when working with milk, and at wastewater treatment facilities, the frequency is higher: typically every 3 days. Workers are required to notify management of the need to wash and repair their PPE.

It's clear that fabric loses its properties and becomes thinner when washed or dry-cleaned. Furthermore, clothing becomes worn and torn with use. How can we balance spending too much on employee clothing with ensuring their appearance is presentable and caring for the items? What should be the criteria for deciding when it's time to send a set of safety footwear and clothing for repair?

- The service life of workwear recommended by the manufacturer and indicated on the label.

- Established standards for providing personnel with special clothing and special footwear.

- Common sense.

Generally, the service life of workwear depends on three factors: climate conditions, the type of production, and the employee's job responsibilities. For example, for an employee in one shop where metal is smelted, wear standards will differ from those for an employee in another shop where the same metal is processed. The second factor is seasonality. Since the service life of winter and summer clothing can vary depending on regional weather conditions and the seasonal work performed, their wear periods should also differ.

Some personal protective equipment is issued to employees "until it is worn out." This includes high-visibility vests, which have an unlimited service life, safety glasses, noise-canceling headphones, knee and elbow pads, certain types of support belts, etc. Replacement PPE is issued only in the event of loss, theft, breakage, wear, or if the equipment exceeds the manufacturer's specified service life.
